Self Sabotage with Cindy Brown

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing my friend Cindy Brown. Cindy is a Family Consultant and public speaker with more than 30 years of experience serving as an Education Consultant, Instructional Coach, and Social-Emotional Coach. She is going to help us understand self sabotage and teach us how to break the cycle.

Since we are human, we all have negative thoughts or ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts). But what can we do about these intrusive and unhelpful thoughts? Oftentimes they are the first things that will pop into our heads when confronted with a situation. The first thing we can ask ourselves “is this really true? Do I have proof of this thought being fact?” These thoughts can contribute to the fear that holds us back.

Luckily, there are three steps we can take to stop the cycle of self sabotage:

  1. Journaling - One of the best ways that you can get in touch with yourself is through journaling. You can Google for some journal prompts or you can sit and write whatever comes to you. Ask yourself “What do I need in this moment?” Spend at least five, or up to 20 minutes each day practicing this. It can be any time of day, but usually the beginning of the day is the best time to fit it in.

  2. Meditation - This can be done right after journaling! It can also be at some other point in your day. There is no thought, just BE. You can always do a guided meditation if you are unsure how or where to start.

  3. Taking time for you! - Be sure to take time for yourself each day. This is especially helpful by using this time to move your body. Aim for 30 minutes per day! Ask yourself “Are my mind, body and soul all coming together?

Be in tune with your inner voices. They are there for a reason! Slow down so your thoughts can settle with you and you can see the bigger picture.
