What Are Your Hidden Barriers With Heike Yates
How often do we tell ourselves that the reason we're stuck is because we don't have enough time?
Or enough motivation.
Or enough discipline.
We convince ourselves that if life were just a little less busy, if work slowed down, if the kids needed us less, or if we simply tried harder, everything would finally fall into place.
But what if that's not what's actually holding you back?
In this week's episode of Coffee & Tea with CarrieVee, I sat down once again with my friend Heike Yates—author of Pursue Your Spark—to explore a powerful question:
What if your biggest barriers are the ones you can't see?
The Barriers We Rarely Talk About
When women begin a journey toward better health, more confidence, or a fresh start, they usually focus on the visible obstacles.
"I don't have time."
"I'm too busy."
"I need to lose weight."
"I just need more motivation."
Those feel like the problem.
But as Heike shared, after working with thousands of women over the past 35 years, she's discovered something surprising.
The visible obstacle is rarely the real obstacle.
Instead, the real barriers often live beneath the surface.
They're the beliefs we inherited.
The stories we've repeated for years.
The identities we've attached ourselves to.
And until we recognize them, we'll continue running into the same wall over and over again.
Sometimes You're Not Stuck—You're Operating on an Old Story
One of the ideas that resonated with me most during our conversation was this:
We often continue living according to rules that no longer fit our lives.
Maybe you've always believed you're "not athletic."
Maybe you've decided you're "too old" to start something new.
Maybe you've convinced yourself that you're only qualified to do one type of work.
Maybe you've spent years believing your worth depends on taking care of everyone else before yourself.
Those beliefs become invisible because we've lived with them for so long.
We stop questioning them.
We simply accept them as truth.
But what if they're not true anymore?
The Stress We Carry Shows Up Everywhere
Our conversation also turned toward something deeply personal for me.
After my cancer diagnosis, surgeries, and losing my mom in the same season of life, I worked incredibly hard to rebuild my physical health.
I changed my nutrition.
I lifted weights.
I walked daily.
I prioritized sleep and sunlight.
Yet my body still wasn't responding the way I expected.
When I asked my wellness practitioner why, she looked at me and gently said:
"I think it's time to look at the emotional side."
That stopped me in my tracks.
Heike explained something so many of us overlook.
Stress isn't just emotional.
It becomes physical.
Chronic stress increases cortisol, affects metabolism, influences our hormones, and can make progress feel almost impossible—even when we're doing everything "right."
Sometimes the barrier isn't what we're eating.
It's what we're carrying.
Awareness Comes Before Change
One of my favorite moments in our conversation came when Heike shared a story about one of her Pilates clients.
The client joked that going to see Heike wasn't relaxing at all.
Why?
Because Heike noticed everything.
She asked questions.
She challenged habits.
She paid attention.
At first, that felt uncomfortable.
But over time, the client realized something powerful:
The more attention she paid to herself, the stronger she became.
That's true for every area of life.
We can't change what we refuse to notice.
Growth starts with awareness.
Not judgment.
Not guilt.
Simply paying attention.
What If You're Solving the Wrong Problem?
Sometimes we work harder when what we really need is to look deeper.
Instead of asking:
"Why can't I lose the weight?"
Maybe we ask:
"What stress am I still carrying?"
Instead of asking:
"Why can't I find the right job?"
Maybe we ask:
"Am I still defining myself by who I used to be?"
Instead of asking:
"Why can't I move forward?"
Maybe we ask:
"What invisible barrier am I protecting?"
Those questions require honesty.
But they also create freedom.
One Small Step Is Enough
We live in a culture that celebrates dramatic transformation.
Complete reinvention.
Massive overnight success.
But lasting change rarely happens that way.
Heike reminds us that momentum begins with one small, intentional step.
Not fixing everything.
Not solving your entire life this week.
Just becoming curious enough to ask better questions.
Sometimes that's where healing begins.
You Don't Have to Stay Stuck
The beautiful thing about invisible barriers is that once you see them...
They aren't invisible anymore.
You suddenly have a choice.
You can continue carrying the old story.
Or you can write a new one.
Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
One step at a time.
Journal Prompt
What can I let go of now that I have more clarity?
As you sit with that question, don't rush to find the perfect answer.
Simply notice what comes up.
Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough doesn't come from working harder.
It comes from finally seeing what's been quietly holding you back all along.
