Routine with Shawn Murphy

Recently I sat down and chatted with my dear friend Shawn Murphy. Shawn is a Podcast Host and an all-around amazing individual who shares his knowledge and expertise around routines. He reminds us that it is never the new stuff that's hard to do. It's the routine stuff. Oof. We have all been there, right? We dread and put off the routine which a lot of time are the actions that keep us moving forward. Let’s hear some tips on how to keep ourselves chugging along!

What is a process we can follow to keep routine activities new and exciting?

It isn’t so much as keeping them new and exciting, because that's why they're called routine. It is, however, more reminding ourselves of their value. Remember, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel. We just need to do it the same way every time so that if things go bad, you're still doing it the same way. If you can become mechanically sound in your process in your career, you'll win every time.💥

How do you create the energy in your life to perform the necessary routine?

Personally, fear. My failure is not just my own. That means that someone else has to pick up my slack. Somebody else has to have their routine interrupted to do what I should be doing. Fear gets a bad reputation but oftentimes it is good to have a little motivating fear or anxiety because then we will have the respect for what it is that we need to do.

So many people want to talk about the next big, great idea. But we forget that the fundamentals are where the success lies. Generally, people don't want to take the time to lay the foundation. They want the instant gratification. Let’s get back to basics and nail those routines! In time, you will reap the benefits. I promise.

Stop reinventing yourself, yourself is pretty awesome. Figure out where you've foundationally got cracks and fill them in, and then move on. I believe in you!
