Amino Acids with Shelly Jo Wahlstrom Part 5 - Tryptophan
We are bringing it all home on our Amino Acids series with Shelly Jo Wahlstrom as we discuss Tryptophan! This is such an important topic, as tryptophan can have such an impact on positive sleep.
WHAT IS TRYPTOPHAN?
Tryptophan is an amino acid that the body uses to help make serotonin and melatonin. As we have previously gone over, serotonin helps regulate appetite, sleep, mood and pain while melatonin helps to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Tryptophan in an essential amino acid, meaning our bodies can not produce it, so we need to obtain it from our diet and/or supplements.
WHY DO WE NEED TRYPTOPHAN?
Tryptophan is vital for a wide variety of metabolic functions that affect mood, cognition and behavior. Research trials show that it can have possible benefits when treating sleep disorders, seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual discomfort and for reducing anxious feelings.
WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF LOW TRYPTOPHAN?
Signs our tryptophan is low can be very similar to the signs of having low serotonin. These include: anxiety, depression, worry, irritability, rage, perfectionism, and difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT WHEN WE SUPPLEMENT WITH TRYPTOPHAN?
Several studies have shown that increasing tryptophan can improve sleep by increasing melatonin. This will help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. If you are looking to improve sleep quantity and quality then this supplement is for you!
